The purpose of the study is to identify the specifics of the functioning of the print press as a tool for the formation of anti-German sentiments in the border territories of the Russian Empire in the first months of the First World War.
Problem. The regional press and its activities in wartime conditions are considered. The formation of the enemy's image in front-line conditions and the impact on the local population are being studied. Special attention is paid to how the allRussian propaganda installations adapted to the local context, which included the presence of a significant German population (colonists) and a tense socio-economic situation.
Methodology. The research is based on the methods of discourse analysis and
historical imagology. The main sources include materials from the newspaper «Novoe Vremya» in the first months of the war, memoirs of journalist A.M. Selitrennikov and Interior Minister and Commander of the Separate Gendarmerie Corps V.F.Dzhunkovsky, as well as documents from the Russian State Military Historical Archive (RGVIA), F. 2005 «Military-Political and Civil Administration under the Supreme Commander», and from the State Archive of the Russian Federation (SA RF), F. 270 «The Office of Comrade Minister of the Interior, Commander of the Separate Gendarmerie Corps V. F. Dzhunkovsky», which contain the materials of the investigations conducted.
Novelty and results. For the first time, data from a systematic analysis of the regional newspaper discourse of the specified period are introduced into scientific circulation. It is shown that the print media in the border area performed a twofold function: on the one hand, it broadcast all–Russian chauvinistic cliches, and on the other, it actively localized the threat by associating it with specific colonist neighbors, which exacerbated interethnic conflicts on the ground. The author comes to the conclusion that it was precisely this duality that made propaganda in the border provinces particularly radical and socially explosive.
Research perspectives. The presented results provide an opportunity for further comparative researches of the mechanisms of information mobilization in other frontline regions of the Russian Empire, as well as for comparison with the practices of military propaganda in the borderlands of the warring powers.
