The purpose of the study is to learn the highly profitable economic activities of the estates of Grand Duke Mikhail Alexandrovich in the Orel province (Brasovskaya and Deryuginskaya «economies») from 1899 to 1916.
Problem. The article is devoted to the consideration of the key issue of agrarian history: What were the real possibilities of modernizing the landlord economy in the early 20th century? Using the example of a specific property, the author analyzes which management decisions, technological and social strategies were used to achieve profitability in the pre-revolutionary period. The question is raised about the relationship between "progressive" farming methods and the preservation of social foundations (relations with peasants) within the framework of a large latifundia.
Methodology. The research is based on the methods of microhistoric analysis and economic history. Previously unpublished documents from the collection of His Imperial Majesty's Cabinet and the personal archive of the Grand Duke, stored in the Russian State Historical Archive, are used as materials. The sources were economic reports, correspondence of managers, property inventories, as well as statistical data from provincial publications.
Novelty and results. For the first time, facts are introduced into scientific circulation that reveal in detail the management mechanisms and finances of a specific highly profitable property of a member of the imperial family. The results of a comparative analysis with other large farms in the region are presented. The author focuses on the key success factors: the transition to intensive multi-field and grass-growing, investing in modern agricultural machinery, organizing their own processing of products and applying elements of social paternalism to ensure stable workforce. It is proved that Mikhail Alexandrovich's estates demonstrated a viable capitalist model that combined commodity production with elements of a patrimonial way of life.
Research perspectives. The results obtained pave the way for further comparative studies of model farms and their role in the socio-economic development of Russian regions, as well as for studying the specifics of land ownership by members of the Imperial house as a special socio-economic group.
