Abstract

The purpose of the study isto provide, based on diary entries, a description of the activities of the first inspector of classes of the Orel Bakhtin cadet corps, the famous Russian teacher Viktor Andreevich Polovtsov (1843-1844).

Problem. The main problem consists in the contradiction between the reformist aspirations of an individual teacher-administrator and the inertial environment of the military-bureaucratic system of the Nikolayev era. The study shows a collision of personal initiative and progressive ideas with limited resources, short tenure, and conflicts within the corps administration.

Methodology. The methodological basis is a combination of historical-genetic and historical-biographical methods. The key source is the diaries of V. A. Polovtsov, which are analyzed with the methods of internal criticism of the source and contextualization. This allows to consider private records not only as evidence of personal experiences, but also as a reflecting institutional practices document.

Novelty. The scientific novelty of the research is defined by the introduction into academic circulation of V. A. Polovtsov's diary complex as the main source for studying the daily management of the cadet corps. The activities of the first class inspector of the Orel Bakhtin corps are analyzed in details for the first time through the prism of his subjective perception, which reveals the mechanisms of pedagogical and administrative decision-making from the inside.

Research perspectives. The content of the study allows to conduct a comparative analysis of the learning process in the network of cadet corps of the Russian Empire. The revealed model of material analysis can be applied to the study of biographies of other statesmen.

Results. The conclusion shows that Viktor Andreevich Polovtsov sought to create a trusting attitude towards cadets as the basis of educational work in the Orel corps, took all possible measures to ensure their comprehensive development and took care of the replacement of teaching vacancies by qualified specialists. He also established close cooperation between the command staff and teachers. Despite the constant conflicts with the director of the corps S. N. Tinkov and some representatives of the administration, Polovtsov managed to win the love of the cadets, attract good teachers to the corps and make a great contribution to the development of the educational and material base of the institution. However, due to the short time he spent in Orel, most of Polovtsov's ideas were not implemented.
