Tradition of Russian Pilgrimage to the Holy Land before Creation of the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society During the Period of Its Activity

The purpose of the study is to analyze the traditions of Russian pilgrimage to the Holy Land. The authors focus on the problem of the development of pilgrimage from Russia in various periods of its history: from the beginning of Christianization until the revolution of 1917.
Methodology. Within the framework of this study, historical-genetic, chronological and diachronic methods were used. The dynamics of pilgrimages from Russia and their nature were analyzed. This methodological complex allowed to identify the scale of development of the Russian pilgrimage. The definition of the specifics of the formation of this cultural phenomenon was achieved through the use of the historical and phenomenological method.
The novelty. The authors analyze the formation of the tradition of Russian pilgrimage to the Holy Land, as well as the role of the Imperial Orthodox Palestinian Society and other public organizations in this process. In addition, the work examines the scale and dynamics of Russian pilgrimage in the period from the moment of Christianization to the revolutionary events of 1917. Based on the conducted historiographical analysis, the characteristic features of the pilgrimage movement of Russian believers to Palestine at various stages of historical development were identified.
Research perspectives. The results obtained in the course of the conducted research can serve as the basis for an in-depth analysis of the history of the tradition of Russian pilgrimage to the Holy Land, and can also be the foundation for further research in the field of the Russian presence in Palestine.
Results. The result of the research was a comprehensive analysis of the tradition of Russian pilgrimage to the Holy Land. The history of the Russian pilgrimage to the Holy Land has deep roots going back to the era of the Christianization of Rus. This phenomenon has evolved from individual "walks" to the scale of a mass phenomenon in the 19th century, characterized by the widespread participation of representatives of various social strata, including peasants, especially women. The Imperial Orthodox Palestinian Society and the Russian Shipping and Trade Society played a key role in the formation and development of the pilgrimage infrastructure, ensuring the safety and accessibility of travel, especially for the peasantry.
