British Policy in South Africa in the Late 1870s and Early 1880s in the Context of the Reflections of the British Political Establishment

The purpose of the study is to analyze the South African positions of the political and public circles of England in the late 1870s and early 1880s through the lens of their response to the events taking place in South Africa.
Problem. The British imperial authorities at that time followed an ambivalent course. On the one hand, they considered projects of union the Cape Colony and Natal with the two Boer states within the framework of the South African Confederation. On the other hand, there was open expansion: the annexation of the Transvaal, the Anglo-Zulu War and the first Anglo-Boer War. It is of scientific interest to analyze the reaction of representatives of the British political establishment to such a dual colonial course of London.
Methodology. The study is grounded in the principles of historicism and objectivity. Drawing on the historical-genetic method and comparative analysis, the study examines key events in South Africa and the political response of the British imperial elite to them. The article addresses the tasks of identifying the points of convergence and divergence in the positions of Conservative and Liberal politicians.
The novelty of the presented research lies in its attempt to clarify the consequences of South Africa's course during the period under review as the origins of the future Second Anglo-Boer War, which resulted in the loss of independence by the Boer republics. The specifics of the imperial rhetoric employed by British parliamentarians during the debates on the South African question are also elucidated.
Results. The late 1870s and early 1880s were marked by British aggressive and expansionist policy in South Africa. The discovery of diamond and gold deposits turned this region into an extremely important object of imperial aspirations. British business and political circles were interested both in the economic benefits and in protecting the Cape Town Sea Route from competition with other European powers. The author concludes that the period under study became an important stage in determining the specifics of British policy in South Africa. It was then that the origins of the second Anglo-Boer War were laid, and South African nationalism was born.
Discussion. Further study of parliamentary debates and memoirs of British politicians will allow to trace the evolution of imperial thinking up to the beginning of the 20th century. A comparative analysis of British policy in South Africa and in other regions of the continent during the same chronological period is also relevant.
