In modern France, the exposure of corruption scandals and the affirmation of the importance of public protest movements are a part of the political culture, which has become the subject of the author's research. The impact of social crises on the internal political stability of the established political regime, as well as their importance in updating the state mechanism, actualize the research topic.
The purpose of the article is to analyze the socio–political crises of the Third Republic in France and their reflection in the caricature of the last quarter of the 19th century. The object of the analysis was the cartoons of the last quarter of the 19th century as visual sources reflecting public sentiments and political conflicts.
Based on a contextual analysis that takes into account historical conditions, the context of origin and perception, the socio-political crises of the Third Republic are described and structured. The problems of government, class struggle and the consequences of the Franco-Prussian War are revealed. A non-standard set of sources allowed the author to clarify the functional interrelationships between public sentiments, their formers and political forces. In particular, it is emphasized that the cartoonists of French magazines have recorded the effectiveness of a number of political transformations, which contributed to the popularity of grotesque illustrations and their public discussions.
The study is based on little-studied materials from French satirical publications, showing key differences in the mechanisms of their embodiment of images of «own» and «other (alien)» against the background of socio-political scandals of the last quarter of the 19th century.
As a result, the visual nature of caricatures as markers of public opinion and their role in shaping political identity in the historical period under consideration is verified. In the future, the use of these sources will help to consider the specifics of public relations and build a unified system of ideas about the era.
